The Governor's Academy varsity boys basketball team kicked off a new era with the start of its 2014-15 season. After posting 315 wins and four New England Championships over 25-years as head coach, Steve Metz transitioned head coaching duties to Jim O'Leary.

Governor’s boys basketball enjoys a storied history and a long tradition of success with numerous players going on to compete at the collegiate level, including five former players who have gone on to play professionally in the NBA, Europe, and elsewhere around the world. The long roster of past distinguished players include two former McDonald's All-American players, Steve Bucknall ('85), and 11-year NBA veteran Dan Gadzuric ('98) in addition to Andre LaFleur ('83) who set the NCAA assist record as a four-year starter at Northeastern University, was inducted into the Hall of Fame at both Governor's Academy and Northeastern University, and today serves as the associate head coach at Providence College. Today, a number of recent Governors basketball players can be found competing at the collegiate level including Duncan Robinson ('12) at Michigan, Grant O'Brien ('12) at Wake Forest, Joe Quo ('13) at Wesleyan, Stephen Basden ('13) at Endicott, and Wes Clark ('10) at Navy. Govs grads have also gone on to professional careers in law, medicine, business, and education.

The Governor's Academy boys basketball program competes within the 16-school Independent School League (ISL), which is widely known as one of the most competitive leagues in New England every year and consistently produces top-level collegiate talent for all divisions. Over the last few decades, The Governor's Academy boys basketball team has won eight ISL league championships and seven New England Championships.

This year's team will need to overcome the loss of six seniors to graduation including Jalyn Hinton, Nick Osarenren, Brett O'Leary, Shawn Backus, Angus Lamond, and Jackson Wotton. The Governor's varsity team is coming off a year in which they recorded a 17-4 record and were awarded a 5th seed in the NEPSAC tournament.
