2009-2010 NEW ENGLAND DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS

2008-2009 NEW ENGLAND DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS
2007-2008 NEW ENGLAND DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS

Girls hockey was established at the Academy in 1985. Since then, the program has grown to field teams at both the varsity and junior varsity levels. They compete within the Independent School League where the ISL is divided between both Division I and Division II schools. With 13 of the 16 ISL schools offering hockey programs for girls, the Governors play across divisional lines and add non-league opponents and tournament games to play between 20 and 25 games each season. Practice takes place four days a week and games are usually played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All home games and practices take place on campus in the Whiston•Bragdon Arena which was completed on November 1, 2007.

Heading into the 2018-19 season, Coach Claudia Barcomb will led the girls varsity team, after spending the past season as an assistant for the team. Coach Barcomb has incredible experience in coaching, for 14 years as a head coach and an assistant.  She graduated from Groton in 1995 where she played field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse. She graduated from Harvard University in 1999. While there she captained the ice hockey team and won a national championship.  She also played lacrosse and captained that team, as well.  From 1999-2002, she was the assistant director of athletics, taught history, and coached field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse at Middlesex School. From there she was the assistant coach of Harvard ice hockey from 2002-2007 and the head coach of Union College ice hockey from 2007-2016. The year before her arrival to Governor's, she was the Associate Director of Athletics, history teacher, ice hockey and lacrosse coach at Kimball Union Academy.  At Governor's, Coach Barcomb serves as the Director of Athletics and Afternoon Programs.  She lives on campus with her family.

Coach Babe Ceglarski has coached for 19 seasons behind the bench at the Academy and will help assist Coach Barcomb with the next season.  A 1977 graduate of Middlebury College, Coach Ceglarski is a career teacher/coach. He started working at the Fay School in Southborough, MA in 1979 and has been at the Academy since 1990. He is a member of the History Department, a dorm parent, and coach of the JV golf team. He worked both as an assistant and head coach of the boy's team for seven years before taking over the girl's team in 1999.

During Coach Ceglarski’s tenure, the Governor's have made nine New England appearances. During a stretch where they were 82 – 16 – 2, they won four consecutive New England titles. Alex Carpenter, Kate Leary and Alanna McDonough combined for a career 1004 points and goalie Jill Conway was 73 – 16 – 2 during their four years of play on that team. Carpenter was the New England tournament MVP four times and in 12 games had 30 goals and 21 assists. She was also ISL MVP during her junior and senior year where the Govs were 44 – 3 – 1 during that span. Alex was also a member of the 2014 U.S. Olympic team and won a Silver Medal in the games at Sochi.

Academy alums have played at a variety of NCAA schools including Boston College, Brown, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut College, Northeastern, Rensselaer, St. Anselm's, St. Lawrence, Trinity, UNH and USM. Brandy Fisher ('94) was awarded the first Patty Kazmaier Award as the top female player in Division I after a stellar career (UNH '98) and played with the US National team for several seasons after college. Alex Carpenter (BC '16) also won the Kazmaier Award for her play in 2015. Many other fine hockey players are competing or have competed in other sports at the college level as they followed their passion for other sports beyond the ice rink. The Governor's Academy has had great success placing student athletes on rosters at the college level and its fine academic and athletic tradition offers opportunities for players to find success beyond Byfield.
