Wrestling - Boys Varsity
The Governor’s Wrestling team enters the 2017-2018 season eager to build upon the momentum generated over the past several seasons. After a winless season four years ago, we recognized the need to make changes in a number of areas. We are grateful to the young men and women who showed tremendous character during challenging rebuilding seasons and we know they are proud of the team we are today. Our mission is to develop young athletes into champions on and off the mat.
During the 2016-2017 season, the team finished 8-11 against one of the toughest schedules in New England and took home six medals from the Graves-Kelsey tournament. We were named the Most Improved Team of the tournament. Six Govs qualified for the New England Championship Tournament, with two placers. We are especially proud that four of those six wrestlers entered Governor’s with no prior wrestling experience.
We will be led this year by our co-captains, Joon Woo Baik and Kristoff Burrell. We return an All-League performer in Jun Kwon as well as Honorable Mention All-League Kristoff Burrell. Several talented newcomers bolster a veteran core with high goals for the coming campaign.
The coaching staff brings 35 years of combined coaching experience to practice each day, as well as ISL and NCAA competition experience. Former Governor’s wrestlers have gone on to wrestle at every level of the collegiate ranks. Our recently-renovated wrestling room features two full-sized mats and is a short walk from our state-of-the-art training room and weight area.
