The Governor’s Academy is proud to feature Summer in Winter, an exhibition by painter and illustrator Sally O. Lee, Governor Dummer Academy Class of 1980. Summer in Winter includes a series of oil and acrylic paintings that illuminate landscapes, celebrate joy, and embrace freedom of expression. Conceptually her paintings reflect and honor nature's integrity. The exhibit will be on display in the gallery in the Remis Lobby of the Wilkie Center for the Performing Arts on The Governor’s Academy campus from now until Friday, February 23.
“To welcome back an alumna who is an award-winning illustrator and artist is a message of how the art world is happening beyond the classroom.” Of Lee’s work, Gallery Director Shanna Fliegel goes on to say, “It is both diverse in its intent and aesthetic, but holistically embraces resilience in a world of expectation and obstacles. Just like the landscape artists that have come before her, humans still find profound hope and vision in the color and composition that nature offers. This exhibition offers a beacon of light to the viewer and I hope we all leave a little more seen and a little lighter after experiencing this work.”
Based on the North Shore, Lee is an award-winning artist, illustrator, and author. After attending Colby College, The Art Institute of Boston, and the New York Studio School, she moved back to Massachusetts in 1986 to continue her art career. She has had several national exhibitions, including a group show at the New York Studio School. Her work can be found in various private collections across the country. In 2003 she received an art grant from MIT that resulted in a group of paintings titled "A Journey into Abstraction." Consequently, Lee has also written and illustrated over forty children’s books and has received awards including the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, the Reviewer's Choice Award, and the Family Choice Award.
