Student Jazz Recital: Join Us on April 11

The Governor’s Academy proudly presents In Both Directions, a special jazz concert, on Friday, April 11, in Frost Library. Join senior musicians YJ Zhao and Ziggy Liu for an evening of vibrant music celebrating collaboration and jazz's ever-evolving spirit. From up-tempo swing to soulful ballads and traditional grooves to modern compositions, the repertoire reflects jazz’s rich journey as our musicians’ paths each move in their own direction.

“There are many reasons why we are so passionate about sharing this music. Jazz is truly more than just music: it’s about the dynamic interplay between musicians, the ever-evolving improvisations, and the sharing of love with our audiences,” shared Zhao and Liu.

Director of Instrumental Music Isaac Kramer adds, “This event is one of the musical highlights of the spring season! YJ and Ziggy are truly world-class artists and people, and it has been a tremendous privilege and honor for me to mentor them. They have crafted an exceptional evening of music that everyone will love and enjoy.”

Liu is a musician who is always exploring new realms of music and pushing his boundaries. He started his musical journey at the age of four, on the piano, learning the classical repertoire. He has always had a strong and special connection to music, which he showed in performances, competitions, and exams at a young age. He found his true passion in his ninth grade year at Govs, when his friend Zhao introduced him to jazz. The colorful and soulful melodies, harmonies, and freedom of improvisation brought Liu to this expansive world of music. At Govs, Liu is a member of the Jazz Band and Orchestra and a student-led jazz combo. He has also participated in the winter musical in the Pit Orchestra for three years. Outside of school, he studied at Berklee during the summer before his senior year and performed in different venues around Boston and New Hampshire.

Zhao is a dynamic musician and composer. He began piano studies at the age of five and continued his classical training before arriving at Govs. The summer before ninth grade, however, he picked up drums on a whim—a decision that ignited a lasting passion. Over his four years at Govs, he immersed himself in jazz drumming, honing his technical skill and artistic expression. A versatile performer, Zhao has embraced every musical opportunity at the Academy, playing with the Jazz Band, Orchestra, and The First (honors chorus), as well as student-led ensembles like the Chamber Orchestra and Pit Orchestra. As a composer, he blends his diverse influences—French impressionist harmonies, Latin grooves, Chinese melodies, and Hindustani sounds—into his original works. His dedication earned him the role of student conductor for the Jazz Band’s upcoming spring concert.

Please join us for In Both Directions. The concert is family-friendly and open to all in the community. Admission is free. See you on Friday, April 11, at 6:00 p.m.
