Fond Farewells to Retiring Faculty

Fond Farewells to Retiring Faculty

After decades of shaping minds, inspiring scholarship, and leaving an indelible mark on generations of students, three of the school’s most respected faculty closed one remarkable chapter in their professional lives to begin another.

Known not only for their dedication to teaching but for the values they instilled, the relationships they nurtured, and the countless lives they’ve touched, Mr. Quigley, Mr. Gerry, and Mr. McLain have become pillars of the school community. As they prepare to retire, their legacy is celebrated not just in years served, but in the stories, memories, and lessons that will echo through Governor's for years to come.

Bill Quigley P'04,'10

Bill Quigley has been a dynamic presence at Govs for 33 years, having served as chair of the History department, Academic Dean, Dean of Faculty, and then Assistant Head of School. However, his true passion is teaching and coaching. Remarkably, while also working full-time, he published his first book in 2016, Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union.

As a legendary AP US History teacher, Mr. Quigley inspired top students to excel while also designing the ninth-grade civics program. His students’ essays, celebrated in "The Concord Review" and honored with prestigious awards like the Ralph Waldo Emerson and Gilder-Lehrman Essay Prizes, reflect his joy and commitment as a teacher and scholar. Bill guided the Harvard Model Congress teams, founded the Writing Lab, organized Martin Luther King, Jr. Day community service at Govs, and hosted the annual Passover Seder, enriching the Academy’s commitment to learning and community.

A skilled tennis player and head coach of the Girls Varsity Tennis team for 16 years, he fostered excellence and a passion for the sport while also serving as an assistant coach for the varsity volleyball team.

Mr. Quigley's passion for scholarship inspired countless students to pursue academic excellence under his guidance. Albert Niu '23 said of Mr. Quigley:

"I have never been more humbled in my academic life than when I received your feedback for my thesis paper draft. It truly changed me for the better. I thank you for teaching me…and reinventing me as a student."

Mark Gerry P'18,'19

Mark Gerry P'18,'19 has been a versatile and innovative member of the math department, a competitive coach, and a valuable contributor and rigorous thinker over his 32-year tenure at Govs. His innovative pedagogy pioneered new teaching approaches at the Academy, emphasizing teaching as a developmental process rather than merely exchanging information for grades.

Mr. Gerry's impact as a coach is storied. For 18 years, he served as varsity football head coach, achieving four ISL championships and three New England Championships. He also coached many athletes who played football in college, and one, Rob Francois ‘04, who won an NFL championship with the Green Bay Packers.

"My experience in the football program with Coach Gerry taught me how respect is earned and the value of hard work…he had a profound impact on my motivation to be the best version of myself," said Brendan Giblin '05.

Famously willing to share his candid opinions, Mr. Gerry also listens to others with an open and curious mindset. Most importantly, he is a good friend and often the first to offer help to colleagues and students alike.

"Mr. Gerry was one of the most impactful adults in my life during my time at GDA. I will always appreciate him so very much." - Joshua Freeman '00

Rod McLain P’07,’09

For over 25 years, Rod McLain P’07,’09 has redefined excellence as a history teacher, trusted colleague, and mentor at the Academy. Known for his humor and humility, he strived to foster success in every student and served as a go-to sounding board for colleagues. Constantly innovating, Mr. McLain tweaked his curriculum relentlessly. “He is like Ahab,” a colleague remarked, “chasing the perfect curriculum.” He also particularly excelled in inspiring JV hockey and football players to be the best version of themselves and to feel a part of a community.

“Mr. McLain had a way of sharing space with students…plenty of jokes, banter, and fun, all with a passion for history. I was challenged and excited to show up,” reflected Makayla Boucher ’19

A former Olympic sprint canoer with medals and championship titles from the 1980s, Mr. McLain's passion for athletics and competition inspired and elevated the football and wrestling programs at Govs.

“Govs was a tremendous experience in my life. I was able to learn so much about character, love of the moment, and work ethic through Mr. McLain. He is a champion in this world and radiates love for life.”  - Kyle Hoffman '16

“Mr. McLain made an enormous impact on thousands of kids…fostering a classroom culture of curiosity, humor, relatability, and overall joyful learning.” - Ariana McLain (Vlachos) '09
