A Fond Farewell to Steve Metz P’07

A Fond Farewell to Steve Metz P’07

Wishing Mr. Metz a Happy Retirement

Since arriving at Governor's in 1978, Steve Metz P’07 has left an indelible mark in the classroom, on the court and field, and in the dormitory. As the Science Department chair for two decades, Steve was a pioneer in project-based and place-based learning at Governor’s. His vision greatly influenced the design of the Schumann Math-Science Center, fostering collaboration between the math and science departments and ensuring every classroom was equipped with dedicated lab space for hands-on scientific exploration.

Steve's leadership shone brightly during his 25-year tenure as head coach of the varsity boys basketball team, where he guided the team to four ISL and four New England championships. His coaching prowess helped shape the careers of three future NBA players. In addition to his basketball coaching, he also served as an assistant coach for the varsity baseball team for a decade. Reflecting on Steve's impact, Anthony Fusco '85 noted, "Steve's teaching and coaching style—a perfect blend of firmness and gentleness—earned him the respect of his students, players, and fellow faculty members. I am proud to have had Steve 'Metzo' Metz as my coach, mentor, and friend."

Steve's dedication to science education extended beyond the classroom.

He founded and directed “Science 2000,” a project dedicated to developing science curricula for Governor’s and other schools. Ever committed to advancing science education, he served as editor of The Science Teacher, the monthly journal of the National Science Teaching Association, from 2004 to 2019.

"Mr. Metz’s chemistry class my sophomore year, with singing and all, was among the best classes I took—not just at the Academy—but ever. As a teacher, I remain hopeful of leading as he did," said Jon Lewis '90. Another former student, Shawn Reeves '87, shared: "Thanks, Mr. Metz, for inspiring my career in science education innovation and leadership."

"Over his 46-year tenure—the second longest in our school's history—Steve has enriched our community with his expertise, perspective, and commitment to student-centered teaching," said Head of School Dr. Peter H. Quimby '85, P'14.

Fellow science teacher and varsity coach Bert McLain P'07, '09 added, "It's incredible to think how much Steve has impacted my adult life. He was instrumental in attracting my family and me to Governor’s early in my career. I've had many department chairs in my years teaching, and Steve proved to be one of the most effective. He has walked the walk over his decades at Governor’s—he truly understands and supports the multifaceted role of the faculty member who teaches, coaches, advises, and is committed to the residential experience of our students. Steve has done it all; he’s an exceptional role model. The love and affection shown to him as he left the building after his last class this spring confirms what a revered man he is."

We wish Steve a very happy retirement.
