International Student Conference at Govs

International Student Conference at Govs

On January 29, Govs students hosted the 2023 ISC (International Student Conference): Losing and Finding Myself. The ISC was co-founded and directed by Judy Wang ‘23 and  Jana Choe ‘23 with significant planning and event support from Miffy Wang '24, Brian Zheng '24, and Cecilia Li '24, and in partnership with students at Phillips Exeter Academy. The ISC hosts international students and friends from New England boarding schools to discuss the cultural, academic, social, and emotional challenges and, ultimately, the rewards of life as an international student. More than 140 students participated in workshops focused on coping with disorientation, identity, and how they are seen vs. how they wish to be seen by others.

Dr. Abel Djassi Amado, an Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Simmons University, was the keynote speaker; you can read more about Dr. Amado here

"We have all experienced cultural shocks when first setting foot in an unfamiliar environment. We may not understand certain sayings, are behind on new movies, and can’t get the meaning of jokes. While dealing with academics at school, we also learn a new culture. In trying to identify our place and role in the unfamiliar environment, we feel disoriented as we find ourselves drifting away from even our own culture," said the conference organizers.

Founded in 2022, the International Students Conference is a completely student-run effort with the mission to build an international student community among New England Independent Boarding Schools. The ISC welcomes all high school students, particularly those with international backgrounds and/or experiences. It is an opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another, and bond with the community.

Judy Wang and Jana Choe will pass the torch to Miffy Wang, Brian Zheng, and Cecilia Li, who will assume leadership roles, along with students at Phillips Exeter Academy, in planning next year's conference scheduled for January 2024.
