The Impact of Your Gift to The Governor's Fund

Every gift supports a unique Govs experience for our student community.

Meet Renee ‘26Shanghai, China

Renee ’26 found connection and community at Govs
Renee was first introduced to The Governor’s Academy during the pandemic and, after virtual tours and interviews, enrolled without ever visiting campus. She was drawn to the sense of community—a place where students are known, supported, and encouraged to grow.

As a ninth-grader, her dorm proctors helped her adjust to life away from home and feel grounded in this new chapter of her life. Now a senior and proctor in Moody dorm, Renee pays that experience forward, guiding twelve students from six countries and helping them find their place at Govs. For Renee, Govs is a place that fosters independence, connection, and a sense of possibility beyond Byfield.

Creativity, leadership, and the mentors who made all the difference
Renee’s involvement at Govs reflects both her creativity and her commitment to community. She performs in theatre and dance, plays volleyball, and is a member of the orchestra and the chamber ensemble, all while supporting others as a community facilitator and proctor.

Her leadership also reaches beyond campus, shaped by the early confidence her ninth-grade Civics teacher, Mr. Quigley P'04,'10, helped her discover as a student and writer. That encouragement led Renee to pursue off-campus workshops, where she helps others find confidence and their own voice through writing. Renee sees this as a natural extension of what she has learned at Govs: the power of self-expression, empathy, and giving back. “Community doesn’t end at campus,” she reflects. “It’s something you carry with you.”

If you’re here today, you’ve already survived everything that’s come your way.

Growth, gratitude, and balance
Renee loves the Chapel Talk tradition. As an underclassman, she found inspiration in the stories seniors shared from the podium, and this year she carried that tradition forward by delivering her own Chapel Talk on resilience. “You are enough and should be proud of yourself,” she told the community. “If you’re here today, you’ve already survived everything that’s come your way.” Her time at Govs has taught her that success isn’t about doing everything—it’s about balance, self-care, and surrounding yourself with people who support you.

Looking ahead
As graduation approaches, Renee reflects on the growth she has experienced and the people who have shaped her time at the Academy. “Before Govs, I went to the same school for eleven years and never had to make new friends,” she says. “Now, I can’t imagine not being surrounded by the people who have become my chosen family.”

Charitable gifts play a vital role in the Academy's operations and make an immediate difference in supporting the people and programs that shape our students’ bright futures.

Your gift, at any level, to The Governors’ Fund will impact all corners of our campus and provide boundless opportunities for every student.
