Head Coach: Becky Stratton
Becky Stratton has taught and coached in Independent schools for over 20 years and is entering her 11th year coaching indoor track. She coaches sprints, middle distance, and relays, and enjoys leading core workouts and stretching. A varsity athlete at the high school and college levels, Stratton recognized that running was her favorite part of any sport. In high school she joined the indoor track team in her “off season” recognizing a great opportunity to maintain fitness and develop as a runner. While competing in middle distance and relays, she learned the important role of “mentality” in running and found that it transferred to her academic work and performance in other sports. This experience solidified her love of running which continues to this day. Stratton competes in road races, enjoys running on trails in the woods, and cross-trains with core/pilates workouts. Stratton is a USATF Level 1 certified coach and teaches all levels of French at Governor’s.
Assistant Coach: Lisa Borgatti
A collegiate soccer player, Lisa Borgatti has coached both soccer and lacrosse at the Academy for over a decade. Focused on the distance runners, she brings high energy and a can-do mentality to the track each day. Borgatti loves horse-back riding and can be found working with horses at a local barn, spending time with her family at their house in Vermont, and piloting sustainability initiatives on Governor’s 456-acre campus. She teaches science, advises students, and is a dorm parent.
Assistant Coach: Steve Suomi
A native of Midcoast Maine, Steve Suomi ran the intermediate hurdles and the 4x400 relay throughout high school and at Colby College. While at Colby, Suomi was the captain of the team, and he was NESCAC and New England DIII Champion in the 400 hurdles. Eager to work with high schoolers serious about their athletic and academic endeavors, Suomi arrived at Governor’s in 2007 as an English teacher, dorm parent, and track coach. After two years coaching pole vault and intermediate hurdles, Suomi took over the outdoor track & field program as head coach. His favorite part of coaching is watching student-athletes improve throughout each spring season and over the course of their four-year career. He believes hard work and determination in both academics and athletics can unlock new potential in adolescents. Suomi is a USATF Level I and Level II certified coach. An avid cyclist, Suomi is also head of the English Department and the director of the French Student Center.
