Though under a decade since its inception, Governor's Boys Alpine Skiing program has experienced a phenomenal level of success. Coaches and captains look to build its reputation and challenge the league’s more veteran programs. The Boys and Girls Alpine Skiing Teams train as a unified program to catalyze camaraderie and inspire a team-first atmosphere. Coaches strive to provide each skier with differentiated instruction that facilitates development as a ski racer and teammate.
Following Thanksgiving break, the season gets started with on-campus training sessions to prepare racers for the slopes. The team travels to Loon Mountain in New Hampshire for tryouts, and the boys’ roster size is generally 14 racers. Both the girls’ and boys' teams follow a similar training and racing schedule as soon as snow arrives in the region. Monday evening practices at Bradford Mountain, located twenty minutes from Byfield, provide on-snow instruction and training runs. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, on-campus dryland sessions efficiently and effectively challenge skiers’ strength, endurance, and aerobic capacities. League races take place on Wednesday afternoons at Nashoba Valley Ski Area and alternate between Slalom and GS formats. Fridays provide flexibility as skiers have the option of heading to the mountain to ski, training with their individual mountain programs, or working with the Academy’s coaching staff to review film and discuss their weekly performance goals.
Govs competes in the Independent School League (ISL) and competes in approximately eight races at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in January and February. The team’s top skiers compete at the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Championships in mid-February at Waterville Valley.
Approximately half of the skiers who make the team have competitive racing experience when they arrive at Governor’s. The remaining half are confident, advanced skiers eager to transition to alpine racing. Prospective skiers, especially those with competitive ski experience in any discipline, are encouraged to fill out the prospective athlete form.
