Governor's Teams
Athletics at The Governor’s Academy is about outstanding performance- as our championship titles, college NCAA scholarship players, and world competitors will attest- but it is also about character.

Program Overview
As is the case for all of our running programs at Governor’s, the boys and girls teams practice together each day. Our philosophy is that indoor track provides the training to improve “conditioning and mentality” to enable strong competition while also providing a fitness base for one’s spring sport”. “Athletes who participate in the indoor track program learn running techniques which improve speed, agility, and endurance, while also developing a mental edge which translates to other sports. Many fall or spring athletes find that indoor track is the best winter option to maintain and improve fitness, technique, and mentality which transfers to all other sports, while also improving their times and occasionally setting new school records.
The ISL does not sponsor a winter track and field schedule. During a typical season, we compete on state-of-the-art tracks at Phillips Andover Academy and Phillips Exeter Academy, competing against the host school and several other independent schools from New England. Each year our top runners qualify to compete at the Dartmouth Relays and the USA Track and Field Open New England Championships at Harvard University. In both of these venues, our athletes compete successfully against top high school and college students from New England. At the end of the season, a few of our athletes compete each year at The Armory in New York City in the Eastern States Invitational.
Coaches: Becky Stratton, Lisa Borgatti, Ruth Koenigsbauer, Milton Kop and Steve Suomi

Coach Profiles
Head Coach Becky Stratton has taught and coached in Independent schools for over 20 years and is entering her 11th year with Govs Winter Track and Field. She coaches sprints, middle distance and relays, and enjoys leading core workouts and stretching. A varsity athlete at the high school and college levels, Becky soon recognized that running was her favorite part of any sport. In high school she joined the winter track team in her “off season” recognizing a great opportunity to maintain fitness and develop as a runner. While competing in middle distance and relays, she learned the important role of “mentality” in running and found that it transferred her academic work and performance in other sports. This experience solidified her love of running which continues to this day. Becky competes in road races (the Tufts 10K and various 5K runs), enjoys running on trails in the woods, and cross-trains with core / pilates workouts. Becky is a USATF level 1 certified coach and teaches all levels of French at Govs.
Coach Steven Suomi is entering his 12th year coaching the winter track and field team at Governor’s. In college, Suomi ran at Colby College where he captained the team, and competed in the intermediate hurdles and the mile relay. He is a USATF Level I certified coach, a USTAF Level II certified coach in the sprints, relays, and hurdles, and a USTFCCCA certified strength and conditioning coach.
Coach Lisa Borgatti is new to the program this year and will be working with the distance group. A collegiate soccer player, Coach Borgatti has coached both soccer and lacrosse at the Academy for the past twelve years. She is an avid runner, CrossFit athlete, and competitive distance obstacle course racer.
Coach Milton Kop is entering his second year of coaching Winter Track and enjoys working with sprinters, middle distance runners, and jumpers. He is a student of the sport and focuses on technique. Coach Kop enjoys identifying drills and strategies that enhance proper form. A collegiate cheerleader, he coached (coed) high school cheerleading for six years. This experience translates directly to coaching track, where Milton contributes his wisdom to work in jumping events. His expertise on strength training in the weight room and with box jumps is a terrific asset to the program. During Coach Kop's younger days, he enjoyed tumbling and cheerleading stunts. Now, he prefers stretching, calisthenics, and short runs.
Coach Ruth Koenigsbauer has taught, coached, and lived in independent schools for the past fifteen years and she is excited to join the Govs Indoor Track running staff. Ruth started running after college and she loves exploring new areas, both by trail and road while running. She enjoys running in local races and through the woods on trails. Ruth is a fitness lover who enjoys a good challenge at Orangetheory Fitness. Ruth lives on campus in Ingham dorm with her husband and two children, and she teaches English.
