Governor's Teams
Athletics at The Governor’s Academy is about outstanding performance- as our championship titles, college NCAA scholarship players, and world competitors will attest- but it is also about character.

Soccer - Girls Varsity
ISL Championships: 2012, 2006
New England Championships (Class B): 2012, 2011
The Girls' Varsity Soccer program has one of the most storied histories of success at Govs. The team experienced a run as ISL Champions and New England Champions including an undefeated season in 2012. With a roster packed with multi-sport athletes, the team takes pride in maintaining a family feel hinging on a culture focused on sportsmanship and support. The 2022 squad earned the ISL Sportsmanship Award based on votes from their ISL opponents, and the coaching staff looks forward to continuing this emphasis on character and skill development.
Team unity is evident every day as players take the practice field as one group, exiting their spirited locker room every afternoon at 3:44 pm for a 3:45 pm start. A long-standing tradition, players rally around exchanging a stuffed animal mascot after each game, passing on the prized award to the athlete who most elevated their play on the given day. The girls also carry a commitment to improving with every touch and finishing the season stronger than they started. A team goal every year is to qualify for a trip to the New England Class B Tournament.
Equipped with stadium lights and committed fans, the Barbara F. Porter field hosts about eight of the team’s eighteen games each fall. A World Cup-size grass field, it is considered to be one of the premier pitches in New England and is supplemented by the Class of ’67 Alfond Turf and Pescosolido Field House for inclement weather use. The team plays twelve Independent School League (ISL) games each fall in addition to competitive match-ups against local opponents including Pingree, Phillips Exeter, and Phillips Andover.
Coaches and athletic administrators are fully committed to supporting players that may want to play at the collegiate level. Finding an academic and athletic program that will fit their needs is paramount to short and long-term student-athlete success. Several former players have continued their soccer careers in college, including Hobart & William Smith College, Sacred Heart University, Saint Joseph University, Syracuse University, Union College, United States Coast Guard Academy, and the University of Richmond.

Coach Profiles
Head Coach Amy Block ‘06:
Amy Block returned to her alma mater in 2012, magnetized by the relationships she formed as a student and the possibility of building a career in education. Block attended Union College where she was a four-year contributor on the women’s soccer team, starting in all but four of her career games. She also competed for Union College’s lacrosse and indoor track teams. She values both the people and the place she is surrounded by as Mathematics Department Chair, Head Dorm Parent, and student advisor in beautiful Byfield. In leading the soccer program, Block looks forward to developing each player’s individual skills and supporting the team’s collective goal each fall.
Assistant Coach Mike Kinnealey:
Mike Kinnealey has returned to NEPSAC soccer after spending thirteen years coaching the Governor’s Varsity Baseball team. Before arriving at Governor’s, he coached boys and girls varsity soccer at Milton Academy, winning four ISL Championships and two New England titles between both teams. In his ten years at the helm of Milton’s girls’ program, the team qualified for the New England Class A Tournament eight times and won 46 games straight! Off the pitch, Kinnealey’s roles include Assistant Head of School, history teacher, and student advisor.
