Carl A. Pescosolido Library at The Governor’s Academy

Built in 1997, the Carl A. Pescosolido Library (known as “Pesky Library” by Governor’s students) is the center of academic life at our New England independent school. Its 20,000 square feet of research and study space houses over 25,000 volumes and hundreds of periodicals along with our Learning Center, Writing Center, and individual and group study areas.

The Pesky Library encourages students to become lifelong learners, giving them the tools they need to gain new ideas and information. From students studying together in light-filled spaces throughout the building to librarians sharing traditional and the newest research tools, our library is an open, inclusive, and supportive space.

Mission

The Carl A. Pescosolido Library provides a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members of The Governor’s Academy community to pursue their personal and academic interests through reading and research. By providing support, a diverse range of resources, and collaborating with faculty we strive to empower our community to become:

  • Skilled, discriminating and ethical users of information
  • Discriminating and ethical producers of information
  • Critical thinkers
  • Collaborators
  • Lifelong readers and learners

Resources to Explore

Our library is a member of the Massachusetts Library System, a state-wide collaborative that fosters cooperation, communication, innovation, and sharing among member libraries of all types. Our membership provides access to interlibrary loan, supplemental reference service, information databases, and document delivery through the Boston Public Library. In addition to scholarly resources, our library is staffed by librarians throughout the day and night who are experienced in guiding students through the process of research. They help students develop information literacy skills and a love of reading for both learning and pleasure.

The Archives

As the oldest boarding school in New England, The Governor’s Academy possesses a treasure trove of historical materials. From the Document of Incorporation of Dummer Academy to decades of class photos to letterman jackets from the 1950s, these artifacts and documents are stored in The Ragle Archives Room in the Carl A. Pescosolido Library.
