Faculty Advisors
What are advisory groups?
Advisory groups are a big part of the Govs experience. Each student is matched with a faculty advisor during their ninth grade year, meaning that every student has a "point person" at school. The Academic Office assigns an advisor based on the student's interests, passions, or dorm placement.
What do advisors do?
An advisor is someone that the student and their family can go to for academic guidance, emotional support, and who can answer questions. An advisor supports a student's adjustment to the Govs community and helps students and families make decisions about courses for the entirety of their high school experience.
When does advisory meet?
Advisory groups meet once a week for 25 minutes on Thursday mornings. Most advisory groups have anywhere from five to seven students made up of students from different grades.
What do advisory groups do when they meet?
On Thursday mornings, you might see the dining hall filled with advisory groups enjoying donuts and iced coffee treats. Other groups may meet in the advisor's classroom or office with bagels from nearby Newburyport. When the sun is shining and the weather is warm, groups might meet outside at a picnic table. Every advisory meeting has a weekly agenda sent by the Academic Office. Topics might include a community event, discussing a recent speaker, academic reminders, community service opportunities, and life beyond Byfield. The time spent in advisory can also be less formal where groups are simply catching up with each other and chatting!
