Preparing for Boarding Life: A Dorm Checklist 

As the Dean of Students, I'm thrilled to be Governor’s students’ guide as they embark on the exciting boarding school journey. I understand that the transition to prep school can be both exhilarating and overwhelming, especially when it comes to preparing for dorm life. 

Every dorm room at Govs has a twin XL bed, a dresser, a closet or wardrobe, and a desk/chair for each student. To make this transition as smooth as possible, I have created a list of dorm items, along with local stores where they can be purchased. Think of this as your checklist for setting up a comfortable and functional space that you can call home.

As boarding students prepare for the school year, we recommend that they bring these items for their dorm rooms:

• Twin XL bed sheets and regular pillow cases (unless using the laundry service)
• Comforter and/or blankets
• Under-the-bed storage bins
• Desk lamp
• Desk supplies
• Posters (must be appropriate)
• Laundry hamper
• Small floor rug (optional)
• Small bookcase (optional)

There are several local stores where items can be purchased once students arrive in Byfield.

In addition to specific items and places to purchase them, here are some helpful suggestions:

Storage Solutions

Dorm rooms can be tight on space, so it's essential to get creative with storage. Consider under-bed storage bins, hanging closet organizers, and collapsible crates. The less clutter, the better.

Tech Setup

Our modern world revolves around technology, and your dorm room should be no exception. Don't forget to pack essential gadgets like a laptop, power strips, chargers, and headphones!

Non-perishable Snacks

All dorms have a community refrigerator. A container of your favorite snacks is perfect for late-night cravings and quick meals as well. (Unfortunately, mini-refrigerators are not allowed in individual rooms, dorm proctors being the exception.)

Personalize your Space

Personalize your space with posters, photos, and your favorite decor items. (Please leave the thumb tacks and nails at home; Command strips are preferred!)

Study Essentials

Don't forget to pack essential school supplies – notebooks, pens, and a backpack are musts! 

Laundry Essentials

Make sure you are equipped with a laundry bag or basket, detergent, and dryer sheets. The school has several washers and dryers around campus. A laundry service is available for those who would like to send laundry out.

Shower Essentials

Please pack essential shower items like towels (bring at least two), shampoo, conditioner, soap, a shower caddy, and shower sandals.
