Governor's Students Join with 1,500 Others from Across New England to Build Safer School Communities

This spring, seven Governor’s students participated in The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute 19th Annual New England Youth Congress at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Castle. The event brought together more than 1,500 middle and high school students and teachers from across Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to address issues of prejudice and develop strategies that build safer and more respectful school communities.

In commemoration of ADL’s centennial, this year’s program featured Ernest Green of the Little Rock Nine, whose courageous actions in Little Rock, Arkansas championed school integration and helped define this country’s civil rights movement. In his introduction of Ernest Green, Congressman Joseph Kennedy III stated that, “Ernest Green is among this country’s better angels who lifted us out of our darkest hours. And an inspiration to those of us committed to the ongoing fight for a truly equal world.”

Through student-led workshops, participants identified
the types of prejudice that are still found
in their schools. “Despite our collective efforts to
eliminate bullying and cyberbullying, young people continue to be targeted because of differences in their race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity and ability,” stated Lori Gans, ADL New England EducationCo-Chair. “At the same time, we know that thousands of students and teachers such as those who attend Youth Congress are actively promoting positive social change and serving as role models for others to follow.”

The workshops are facilitated by 125 ADL student peer trainers, who lead discussions on these issues in their middle and high schools throughout the year. “These extraordinary students deserve our attention and support,” said Phil Fogelman, Director of ADL New England’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute. “With school safety having become a top priority, we ought to recognize these young
people for their leadership and commitment to each other and their communities.”

Governor’s students who attend the conference included:

Shu-Hui Wee ’13, Singapore
Brett Bidstrup ’13, Byfield, MA
Jean Bower ’13, Newburyport, MA
Tianna Jonas ’13, Philadelphia, PA
Brittany Pérez ’13, Staten Island, NY
Jalina Suggs ’13, Lynn, MA
Andrew Werchniak ’13, Hampton Falls, NH

The app is available only to alumni of The Governor’s Academy and can be downloaded onto your Android, iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch by visiting the iTunes App Store and Google Play for Android users.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some Frequently Asked Questions that may help you get started
Do I need to register to use the app?
To use the Alumni Directory, Alumni Nearby, and Class Notes, you’ll need to register.
You will need to enter the email address and name we have on file in our Alumni Office (you can always check with us to see how we have you listed, maiden or married name etc.) after downloading the app you will then be prompted to verify the terms of use for the app through an email sent to you. If your email is not accepted, please contact the Alumni Office at alumni@govsacademy.org to verify your email on file. We will help get you connected! You can see events, news, and social media pages without registering.
What personal information will be available for alumni to see?
The same information we have always used in previous online and print alumni directories. Name, class, home and work address, phone numbers, email, education, and employment information.
Can I edit or hide my information displayed in the app?
Yes. To update or hide any of this information, simply select “Update My Profile” in your record and note the changes or updates you would like. This request will be received by our alumni office and the changes will be made. Requests can also be emailed to alumni@govsacademy.org.
Can I have just my name and class year listed with no additional information provided?
Yes. Just follow the procedure noted above.
Using the directory, can I see a list of just my graduating class?
Yes, just enter your graduation year in the search field of the directory.
When using the Alumni Nearby map feature, how do I know who is in the area?
Click the clipboard on the bottom left of the screen. This will generate a list of the alumni in the area sorted alphabetically.
Does the app track my whereabouts?
No, your location will not be tracked by the app. The nearby function purely pins your home address, and would not show anyone your current location.
Can I email or call an alum directly from the app?
Yes. After you find the person’s profile you will have the option to contact them with whatever information they have available. You do this by simply clicking on the contact information, which will prompt your phone to either open up your email messenger, or by initiating a phone call. If you find a friend or personal contact that doesn't have any of their information, you can also “suggest an update” and make sure their information is up to date.
Why do I only see 50 contacts in the list view of the GPS search?
From a performance standpoint, 50 is a workable amount of data to download at a time. The results are shown in alphabetical order. You can further filter results by name, company, school, or year with the filter on the bottom right.
How do I utilize my LinkedIn account for better networking capability?
The app enables alumni to directly connect and professionally network using LinkedIn. Once your account is verified, you will be prompted to connect with your LinkedIn account. Once you are logged in, you can view information that alums have chosen to include on their personal LinkedIn profiles along with the number of connections you have in common. Personal preferences within this listing are driven by your LinkedIn account settings. Don’t forget to list The Governor’s Academy in the education fields and to connect with The Governor’s Academy/GDA Alumni + Friends LinkedIn Group!
Email Verification
The Governor’s Academy Alumni Connect Mobile App for iPhone and Android uses email verification and is limited to use by confirmed alumni of The Governor’s Academy/Governor Dummer Academy
Any other questions?
Feel free to contact Director of Alumni Relations Amy Swiniarski, aswiniarski@govsacademy.org or 978.499.3187.
