Alpine Skiing - Girls Varsity
2017 NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Class "C" - Third Place
Varsity Alpine Girls Ski Team
The Governor's Academy Girls and Boys Alpine Ski Teams had their inaugural season 2014-15. This upstart program experienced a wonderful level of success during the past two years and looks to continue to make waves among the veteran programs of the ISL. Both girls and boys teams train Monday nights at Bradford Mountain and race against ISL schools Wednesdays at Nashoba Valley, with on-campus practices held Tuesdays and Thursdays. Skiers are free on Fridays so that they may head up to the mountains to train with their individual mountain programs and/or free ski a their mountain of choice.
The season begins after Thanksgiving break with dry land training that includes strength training and aerobic workouts, as well as basic technical ski racing instruction. The transition to the slopes takes place as soon as Mother Nature allows. Weekly races for both Varsity and JV run from the first week of January through the end of February. League races are mostly modified GS races with slalom races for varsity skiers the two weeks leading up to New England Championships. The top skiers compete at the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Championships in mid-February.
Approximately half the skiers on the team have competitive racing experience when they first join the team; the other half are confident, advanced skiers excited to give alpine racing a try. The teams practice and train as one group to spur camaraderie, team bonding, continued improvement, and a general good time. With everyone together, varsity and JV, girls and boys, on a daily basis a team-first atmosphere prevails. At the same time the coaches strive to give each skier differentiated instruction to facilitate their growth as a racer and individual. This is true when fine-tuning the mental aspect of racing and race-prep for experienced racers and while teaching the basics of running gates for those new to race competition. Prospective skiers, especially those with competitive ski experience in any discipline, are encouraged to fill out the Prospective Student Player profile found on the Athletics home page.
