The Governor's Academy has had a golf team since the 1920s. The Ould Newbury Golf Club is the team’s home course for practice and matches. Ould Newbury is a semi-private club, but the team, as well as the Academy’s students and faculty, have special privileges there, as the school owns the land that includes the course and the clubhouse. Recently, Ould Newbury has undergone some significant conditioning changes and, as a result, it is considered one of the finest nine-hole courses in Massachusetts.
The Governor’s Academy golf team competes in the Independent School League against Belmont Hill, BB&N, Lawrence, Middlesex, Milton, St. Mark’s, Thayer, St. Sebastian’s and Noble & Greenough. Besides playing each of these schools at least once during the regular season and competing for The Walworth Trophy (the team with the best win-loss record in the league), The Academy also participates in the ISL Tournament when all the schools field five-member teams and play 18 holes medal play. The team with the lowest score is awarded The Kingman Cup. In addition, the golf team competes with Andover and Exeter on three separate dates in medal play competition for The Witherspoon Cup. Other schools on the schedule include Holderness and Tabor.
Both boys and girls are welcome participants for spots on the team. In a normal year, 12 to 14 students comprise the whole squad, with seven or eight earning spots for competition.
The 2011 Golf Team was led by sophomore co-captains Geoff Sullivan and Kyle Vincze. They were joined in matches by juniors Mac Bogart, Christian Cavarretta and Ben Holloran; sophomore Ian Freedman, and freshmen Katie Barrand and Andrew Kulig. The team finished seventh in both the Walworth Trophy and Kingman Cup competitions and was third in the race for the Witherspoon Cup. The golf team competed very well during the season and will have all members back at the varsity and junior varsity level as there are no seniors in the program.
