Lacrosse - Boys Varsity
ISL Champions: 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 (undefeated), 2009, 2011 (undefeated), 2012, 2015
Lacrosse became a sport at The Governor’s Academy in 1937 under the leadership of A. MacDonald “Mac” Murphy. Heb Evans, a Baltimore native and graduate of the Gilman School, brought the team to the forefront of New England lacrosse during his 30-year coaching career from 1955 – 1985.
Today, the team continues to maintain a place among the top boys programs in New England and in the nation. Over the last 12 seasons, the team has won 174 of 180 games. Dozens of players have gone on to play NCAA lacrosse, and three, JJ Morrissey ’02, Martin Cahill ’06, and Remington Pope '10 have played in the MLL. In the spring of 2016, Tate Jozokos '13 (UNC), Ryan Macri '13 (UNC), Bug Carper '14 (UNC), and Eddie Gilman '14 (UNC) all won a NCAA Championship to join A.J. Enchill '12 (Tufts '14,'15), Blake Riley '09 (UVA), JJ Morrissey '02 (UVA'06) Greg Carroll '98 (Middlebury '02) and Steve Krasco '05 (Salisbury) as NCAA Champs. Seven players have been named ISL MVP, and 14 have been named All-American.
Following the 2016 season Coach Peter "Biddy" Bidstrup retired following a legendary 21 year tenure. In that time, the team won eight ISL Championships and 250 of 325 games. Coach Bidstrup's impact off the field was equally great as he mentored countless students, and built a program that was respceted acrsosssthe country. All those who played for Biddy left the school with his core values of: Selfless, Creative, Committed instilled in them, and the NEVER GIVE UP motto of his late wife Molly living on within each of them.
The philosophy of our program is quite simple: Enjoy the game, get the utmost from the team experience, strive for excellence, and develop habits of mind and body that will serve our players well for their adult lives. We believe that experiences on the field help to develop qualities of character that contribute to the future success of our graduates in all respects. We encourage our student-athletes to play multiple sports while fully engaging in the many academic and extracurricular programs that the Academy offers. Our graduates remain keenly interested in our program and the Academy in general.
The Red Dogs are one of 16 teams in the highly competitive Independent School League. In addition to league games, the team plays non-league opponents such as Tabor and Exeter as the schedule permits. Games are typically played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The junior varsity and thirds teams also play a competitive league schedule.
The team plays and practices on the William L. Alfond Class of ’67 Turf Field. This 100x120 yard all-weather facility provides an outstanding venue for both games and practices. A newly renovated locker room offers ample space for pre-game preparation, film review and meetings. Many Academy athletes utilize the Alfond Fitness Center for cardio and free-weight training. Our state of the art sports medicine facility provides care for those who need attention to injuries and is staffed by two full time athletic trainers.
