Byfield, MA – The Governor’s Academy hockey team hosted #1 ranked Noble and Greenough school on Wednesday afternoon. Nobles has been the top ranked team in New England for the bulk of the year, rattling off 17 consecutive wins leading up to today’s contest. The boys from Byfield had upset on their minds from the drop of the puck. Both teams would play hard and fast in a tight checking first period. Govs would tally first on a goal by Freshman Bobo Carpenter assisted by Junior Lucas Bombardier. The teams would start the second period with Govs leading 1-0. Play in the second period was tough, both teams would fight for every inch of the ice and the play of the Governor’s defensemen was admirable. The D-core would take all that Nobles could give in the second and Junior goaltender Brendan McMenimen was more than solid in net. Junior Ryan Scarfo would score both goals in the second period for Governor’s, with assists coming from Junior Nate Ferriero and Senior Bryan Sullivan. Junior Geoff Sullivan would add an assist on one of the goals as well. In the third period the top team in New England would fight hard and show the fans in Byfield why they have been among the best all year. They would pepper McMenimen and he was big in goal, including a great stop just 10 seconds into the period. Govs would add few insurance goals in the third and the score was not indicative of the strength of the Nobles team. Earning all of the bounces on the night, Govs would finish the game with six goals and McMenimen would earn a 32 save shutout. The win pushes the team’s record to 12-8-3 on the year and the squad is fighting to get back to 500 in the difficult ISL Keller division. On Friday Govs travels to Phillips Andover to face a strong team with one of the top scoring lines in New England. The puck drops at 6:45 in Andover.
