Exeter, NH – The boys hockey team headed to Phillips Exeter Academy confident after winning the Joshua Weeks Tournament at Tabor Academy. Exeter ranked number 4 in New England got off to a quick start and carried the play through the first period. Both Govs goaltenders made an appearance in the first stopping a barrage of shots by the Exeter team. In the second period the boys from Byfield showed their toughness getting back into the game with a power play goal from Senior Alex Minter. Govs continued to work hard and put pressure on Exeter throughout the second period. With 12 seconds left in the second, Junior Lucas Bombardier scored a shorthanded goal on a great individual effort. Govs went to the locker room with the game knotted up at three. In the third period both teams played hard and fast, with great saves on both ends. Junior Brendan McMenimen was strong in the pipes, recovering from a tough start, and stopped 33 of 35 shots on the night. With ten minutes left in the third, Senior Captain Connor Costello snapped a wrist shot at the net and Junior Cam Laughlin tipped the puck in for a goal. The two teams would battle to the finish and Exeter would show why it is ranked 4th in New England, tying up the game with three minutes remaining in the game. The tie moves the team’s record to 8-3-2. Governors will be in action again at BB&N on Saturday at 1 o’clock.
