Belmont, Ma – On Wednesday night the boys Varsity Hockey Team took on a tough and hard working Belmont Hill team. Both teams entered the night with solid wins in their previous games and came in to the contest playing with confidence. The first period was a sparring match where the teams felt each other out, trading punches throughout the first period. The Governor’s squad in particular played a cautious and defensive style as it adjusted to playing on an Olympic size ice sheet. In the first period Belmont Hill posted 7 shots and Govs had just 6. At the end of the first period the game was scoreless.
In the second and third periods both teams attacked hard and often. The D-core of Costello, Dalton, Geoff Sullivan, DuCharme, and Nonis played strong in every facet of the game. In the second, Govs finally got to the Belmont Hill goaltender and posted two goals. The first of the goal was a strong face-off win by Alex Minter to Lucas Bombardier. Bombardier stayed with the play and scored high to the glove side. Governor’s second goal came off of a nice neutral zone play where all five members of the team touched the puck on the entry. Ryan Scarfo fired a quick wrist shot at the net and followed up the play to bury his own rebound. Belmont Hill would not go away and ever opportunistic capitalized on a Governor’s turnover and the period ended with Governor’s holding on to a 2 to 1 lead.
The third period was a test of will and grit. Belmont Hill came out fast and the boys from Byfield pushed back for each inch of the ice. The third was a battle and Govs played strong team defense, with Senior goaltender Nick Commesso as the backbone. Commesso would turn away 29 of 30 shots on the night. Junior James Murphy finished the game off with an empty net goal. The win was a total team effort. As the team arrived back to Byfield it immediately turned its attention to defending New England Champion Milton Academy. Governor’s will play a college style weekend starting at Milton on Friday night at 7pm and then quickly turn around and host Milton at Whiston-Bragdon Arena on Saturday at 3:30pm. The win on Saturday night moves Governor’s record to 2-1 in the ISL Keller division and overall for the season.
