Athletics at The Governor’s Academy is about outstanding performance- as our championship titles, college NCAA scholarship players, and world competitors will attest- but it is also about character. It’s about the boy who bravely decides to join the wrestling team as a sophomore and works so hard at his new sport that he receives the coach’s award for his dedication. Or the goaltender for the girls’ varsity hockey team who patiently waited for two years before finally having a chance to prove herself and become assistant captain and MVP.
Governor’s is a charter member of the Independent School League (ISL), the oldest independent school athletic association in the United States and arguably one of the most competitive leagues in the nation.
The league comprises 16 private schools in New England, including Belmont Hill, Brooks, Buckingham Browne & Nichols, The Governor’s Academy, Groton, Lawrence Academy, Middlesex, Milton Academy, Noble & Greenough, Rivers, Roxbury Latin, St. George’s, St. Mark’s, St. Paul’s, St. Sebastian’s, and Thayer Academy. Founded in 1948, the league’s members compete in 18 sports as part of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC).
Governor’s has won numerous ISL and NEPSAC titles in recent years. Yet everyone can get into the action with more than 50 interscholastic teams at four levels of play, as well as afternoon programs like rec basketball, instructional tennis, and yoga.
We teach that “strength” has many meanings. The vital courage to try something for the first time and give it your all is always as respected as the ability to win a championship.
