Exchange Opportunities

Governor's offers a number of different exchange opportunities. Below is the list for the 2016-2017 school year. All trips have Governor's faculty chaperones (number of chaperones is based on the number of students).

China
Projected dates (subject to change until reservations are made): Spring 2018

School: Pudong Foreign Language School in Shanghai
Residence in the dorms during the week and on home stays with Chinese families on the weekends

Program: The students will attend some classes, eat in the dining hall, participate in activities such as dumpling making, traditional crafts, and seal cutting. Chinese is not required (though helpful!)

Trips in the Pudong/Shanghai area will be led by one of the Chinese teachers and will include:

    • Shanghai Museum
    • Pearl Tower
    • Hangshou and Suzhou
    • Huangpu Riverboat Tour Excursions outside of the Pudong/Shanghai area:

3 night trip to Beijing with established tour company. Travel to Beijing will be by train.

    • Great Wall
    • Imperial Palace and Forbidden City
    • Temple of Heaven
    • Ding Mausoleum
    • A Beijing Hutong

There will be two faculty members accompanying the students. The faculty members will also be housed in the dorm and will accompany the students on all excursions except for the home stays.

South Africa

School: African Leadership Academy

Residence in the dorms

Program: The students are expected to go to classes when not on trips. All students use laptops, and our students are encouraged to bring theirs along. Classes are taught in English. There are many extracurricular activities available to students, and there are also many evening lectures from dignitaries from around Africa and the world.

Trips in Johannesburg area:

    • UMOJA: native history with dance and song
    • Sandton City or Rosebank Market shopping
    • Community outreach program with ALA students
    • Soweto tour and Apartheid Museum
    • Cradle of Humanity
    • Hiking in Magaliesburg Mountains

Excursions:

    • Overnight Safari in Pilanesberg Game Reserve
    • Cape Town (2 nights) with tours of District 6, townships, the waterfront, the Cape Peninsula, Table Mountain

One faculty member will accompany the students and will be housed on campus. The school is a closed campus, and students are not permitted off-campus without an adult.

Navajo Preparatory School

School: Navajo Preparatory School in Farmington, NM

Residence in the dorms

Program: The students will participate in a week of celebration of Navajo culture and history (Hozho Naasha Week). Activities include participation in blessing ceremonies and traditional dances, excursions through the Navajo Nation, trips to Farmington and Window Rock, and hiking and camping in areas such as Canyon de Chelly.

One faculty member will accompany the students and will be housed on campus.

Mexico
Projected dates (subject to change until reservations are made): Spring 2017

School: The Harkness Institute, Nueva Vallarta, Mexico

Residence at homestays with students’ families

Program: The students will attend daily classes, taught using Harkness techniques. Some classes are taught in English, others in Spanish, so a knowledge of Spanish is very helpful- especially in homestays. Afternoon and weekend visits to town, the beach, and local points of interest. 

One faculty member will accompany students and be housed on campus.
