2009-2010 NEW ENGLAND DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS
2008-2009 NEW ENGLAND DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS
2007-2008 NEW ENGLAND DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS

Girls hockey was established at the Academy in 1985. Since then, the program has grown to field teams at both the varsity and junior varsity levels. Our relatively new program has experienced various levels of success in recent years, becoming competitive within the Independent School League. Girls hockey within the ISL is divided between both Division I and Division II schools. With 13 of the 16 ISL schools offering hockey programs for girls, we play across divisional lines. Our schedule of non-league opponents and tournament games allows us to play between 20 and 25 games each season. Each team is able to practice four days a week and games are played generally on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All home games and practices take place on campus.  Our new state of the art Whiston-Bragdon Arena was completed on November 1, 2007.

Coach Babe Ceglarski enters his eleventh season behind the bench at the Academy. A 1977 graduate of Middlebury College, Coach Ceglarski is a career teacher/coach. Before coming to The Governor's Academy, he worked at the Fay School in Southborough, MA for 11 years as a teacher, coach and athletics director. He has been at the Academy since 1990 and is a member of the History Department, a dorm parent, and coach of the varsity golf team. He worked both as an assistant and head coach of the boy's team for seven years before taking over the girl's team in 1999.

During Mr. Ceglarski's tenure, the girl’s hockey team has made four post season appearances. The 2007 - 2008 team was crowned New England Division II Champions, as they finished the season 17 - 6 and swept through the tournament and beat Middlesex 3 – 2 in double over time to end the season. They defended their title successfully during the 2008 – 2009 season with a 4 – 0 victory over Southfield in the NE finals and finished the season 21 – 7 – 1. Sophomore Alex Carpenter was repeated as tournament MVP and was joined on the ISL All - League team by junior Kelly Lavallee, while sophomores Kate Leary and Alanna McDonough were Honorable Mention selections. This year’s team was made up 14 players (four senior, three juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen) and should be solid again next season since the bulk of the scoring came from the all-sophomore line of Carpenter, Leary and McDonough who had 266 points between them.

Academy alums are currently playing at Trinity, Rensselaer, Northeastern, Brown, and St. Anselm. Other graduates have also laced them up at UNH, Bowdoin, Yale, Connecticut College, USM, St. Lawrence and Colby. Brandy Fisher ('94) was awarded the first Patty Kazmaier Award as the top female player in Division I after a stellar career (UNH '98) and played with the US National team for several seasons after college. Kelsey Johnson ('05) was the 2008 ECAC Player of the Year for Division II powerhouse St. Anselm as she helped lead them to a league title during the past season. Many other fine hockey players are competing or have competed in other sports at the college level as they followed their passion for other sports beyond the ice rink. The Governor’s Academy has had great success placing student - athletes on rosters at the college level and its fine academic and athletic tradition offers opportunities for players to find success beyond South Byfield.
