 | | 2009-10 Boys Varsity Basketball |
The boys basketball program at the Academy has been well established as a strong competitor within the Independent School League (ISL) over the years. Our boys basketball teams have competed with determination and commitment winning eight league championships and seven New England Championships. The team made it to the New England Prep Class C Tournament for 14 of the past 22 years (including the ’08-’09 season) and to the Championship Game for three out of the last ten years.
Governor’s basketball enjoys a storied history and a long tradition of success. In addition to preparing numerous players for college play at the Division I-III level, five of our players have gone on to play professional basketball in the NBA, Europe and elsewhere. Andre LaFleur '83 set the NCAA Division I assist record as a four-year starter at Northeastern University, was drafted by the Houston Rockets, played professionally in Australia, and was recently inducted into the Northeastern University Athletic Hall of Fame. LaFleur currently is an assistant coach with the NCAA Division I National Champion University of Connecticut Huskies, in addition to working at the Academy’s summer basketball camp. Terrence Talley '81 started for the Boston College team which in 1985 went to the NCAA round of sixteen, and Tony Thomas '80 was a leading scorer at AIC. Steve Bucknall '85 was a McDonald's All-American, graduated from the University of North Carolina, where he started for his final two years, played for the Los Angeles Lakers and now coaches professionally in Europe. Derric Small '86 scored over 1000 points at Connecticut College.
Dan Gadzuric ’98, another McDonald’s All-American, was rated by PrepStar as the nation’s top high school center in 1998. After a successful four-year career at UCLA, Dan was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks and is currently in his fifth season as their center.
The 2008-2009 boys basketball team set their sights on competing in the NEPSAC Class C post season tournament prior to the beginning of the season. Led by senior tri-captains, Luis Alvarez ‘09, Daniel Hines ‘09 and Adam Marshall ’09 (1000 pt. scorer), this team goal was achieved by hard work and dedication. The work ethic established last year should continue with the nucleus of returning players, Wes Clark (’10), KC Walley (’10) and James Gomes (’11). With the graduation of seven (7) seniors from last year’s team, Head Coach Mike Williams will rely heavily on this group to mentor the incoming underclassmen and continue to uphold the Academy’s basketball tradition. “Our goal for Governor’s Academy basketball is to compete from buzzer to buzzer every single game. Teams are going to have to beat us to win. We will play with pride and passion as we represent the Governor’s Academy community.”
