New Construction: Artificial Turf Field
The new turf field had an auspicious beginning when the boys varsity lacrosse team trounced St. Paul's on May 9, 13 to 5, in the first game played on the new surface. The new artificial turf field is just one of major improvements undertaken on campus this year. Varsity and sub-varsity field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams are in good company when using the field. Gillette Stadium, home to the New England Patriots, was quickly equipped with the turf after disastrous conditions precipitated the installation in November of 2006. The new synthetic turf has a unique water draining capacity, meaning the Governors can play in virtually any weather, without losing practice time while waiting for the the field to dry. The new turf also will save the Academy 720,000 gallons of water each year.

Why build an artificial turf field?
- Artificial turf provides a safe, consistent playing surface that requires little maintenance and saves natural resources.
- Artificial turf needs no rest: the field could be played on virtually every day of both the spring and fall seasons with no reduction in the quality of the surface.
- Artificial turf will allow the turf field to become our varsity game field for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse.
- Since snow and rain make an early spring season practice difficult in New England, an artificial surface will allow the spring season to begin on time regardless of the weather.
