Joseph Hoague ’37
Joseph Hoague '37

Joe Hoague ’37 played five varsity sports at GDA, serving as captain of the baseball team his senior year. In his junior year, Joe played football, hockey, and baseball; as a senior, he competed in football, basketball, winter track, and baseball. He was awarded the Academy’s most honored prize, the Morse Flag, for earning the highest respect of the faculty. After GDA, Joe played football at Colgate University, where he was a three-year letterman and honorable All-American. After graduating from Colgate, Joe played professional football with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the old Boston Yanks. In 1980, Joe was named to the National High School Association Hall of Fame for his dedication to coaching football at Melrose High School in Melrose, Massachusetts.

 

Bob Rex ’53
Bob Rex '53

Bob Rex ’53 played on the football, basketball and baseball teams at GDA, earning a total of six varsity letters. As co-captain of football during his senior year, Bob led the team to an undefeated season and was named co-MVP; as captain of basketball that year, he was also named MVP. His achievements on the field and court earned him the Goodwin Athletic Prize at the end of his senior year, as well as the Morse Flag for garnering the highest respect of the faculty. After GDA, Bob attended Dartmouth College, serving as captain of the football team in 1956. He was named second team All-Ivy and won the Boston Sports Writers Achievement Award that year.

Carl "Skip" Pescosolido ’55
Carl "Skip" Pescosolido '55

Carl “Skip” Pescosolido ’55 played football and competed in winter and spring track at GDA. He was MVP and captain of the football team during his senior year, two-time captain of spring track his junior and senior years, and MVP of spring track in his senior year. Skip won six different events in winter and spring interscholastic track at GDA, and held seven individual school records. He competed in the National High School Decathlon as a junior, placing seventh, a first for a GDA athlete. At the end of his career at GDA, he was awarded the Goodwin Athletic Prize. After GDA, Skip attended Harvard University where he competed in track and field.

Ray Huard ’67
Ray Huard '67

Ray Huard ’67 played football, basketball, and baseball at GDA. As a senior, Ray was captain of the football team, the MVP, and was chosen as the first team end on the Boston Herald All New England Prep School football team. That academic year, he was also co-captain and MVP of the basketball team and made first team All-Prep in that sport as well. In the spring of his senior year, Ray was co-captain of the baseball team and was named MVP, completing his three-sport sweep for the year. He received the Goodwin Athletic Prize from GDA and also the Morse Flag, given to that senior who has earned the highest respect of the faculty. Ray took his talents to Princeton, where he played football and baseball initially, before concentrating on baseball for most of his collegiate career. He was captain and shortstop of the Princeton baseball team and was then drafted by the Atlanta Braves.

Susan Perry.’81
Susan Perry.'81

Susan Perry ’81 played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse at GDA and was named All-League in all three sports. Susan was captain and MVP of the soccer team her junior and senior years; captain of the basketball team her junior and senior year; three-time women’s basketball MVP; co-captain of the lacrosse team and co-MVP her senior year. She was the first woman to earn 12 varsity letters at GDA and was also the recipient of the Anne Marie Murphy Athletic Award. After graduating from GDA, Susan attended Colby College and American University where she competed in basketball and lacrosse. She later became the first female Athletic Director at GDA.

Andre LeFleur ’83
Andre LeFleur '83

André La Fleur ’83 competed in varsity football, cross-country, basketball and spring track at GDA. He served as captain and was named MVP of the basketball team his junior and senior years, and was named ISL All-League. Awarded the MVP Somerby Track Prize during his junior and senior years, André was co-captain of spring track during his senior year. The recipient of the Goodwin Athletic Prize his senior year at GDA, André went on to play basketball at Northeastern University, where he was the all-time assist leader and played with Reggie Lewis in the backcourt. André was drafted by the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association, and went on to play professional basketball in the Australian National Basketball League.

G. Heberton Evans
G. Heberton Evans

Heb Evans epitomized the triple threat as a faculty member at Governor Dummer Academy during his tenure from 1948 to 1985. Heb was a math teacher, dorm parent, and a legendary wrestling and lacrosse coach at GDA. As head wrestling coach at GDA from 1958-1985, he led his team to three undefeated seasons in 1959, 1960 and 1961, earned two Class-A Championships in 1961 and 1962, one Graves-Kelsey Championship in 1982, and a New England Championship in 1983. He was also inducted into the Massachusetts Wrestling Hall of Fame. From 1958-1984, Heb was head lacrosse coach at GDA, leading his team to a New England Championship in 1966 and a Northern New England Prep School Championship in 1977. He was inducted into the New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1995. Heb’s book, Lacrosse Fundamentals, is still used as a handbook for coaches and players around the country.
