Buildings & Facilities

The Phillips Building

The James Duncan Phillips Building, the Academy’s main administration facility, is home to  the Headmaster’s and Deans’ offices, the  Admissions office, the College Counseling office, the Jacob Dining Hall,  and several  large common areas. Designed to accommodate sit-down meals, the dining hall serves three meals a day prepared by our own skilled staff.

The Performing Arts Center

The Performing Arts Center at The Academy, opened in 2001, offers numerous practice rooms, a 500-seat theater with an expansive stage, a computerized control room, a black box theater, ensemble rooms for band and orchestra practices, an electronic music classroom, and a large lobby, with adjoining food preparation area for receptions and art exhibits.

The Carl A. Pescosolido Library

The Carl A. Pescosolido Library, the intellectual heart of the community, opened in 1997. More than 20,000 square feet of study and research space house a 30,000-volume collection with capacity to 50,000 volumes, 175 data ports, a technology classroom, and expansive, light-filled research and group study areas.

The Frost Building

The Frost Building houses 12 seminar and meeting rooms. Plenary meetings for up to 100 people can convene in the school’s former library, a spacious room with high ceilings, chandeliers, capabilities for audio-visual presentations, and large windows looking out to the campus.

Center for the Study of
Mathematics and Science


Opened in 1997, the Center for the Study of Mathematics and Science contains science project rooms, eight combination classroom-labs, six math classrooms, and a computer lab. Classrooms feature excellent lighting, ample white board space, and data ports at every desk. The Center is connected to all of our academic buildings through a sophisticated technology infrastructure, allowing access from dorm rooms, the library, classrooms, and computer labs around campus.

The Kaiser Arts Center

The Kaiser Visual Arts Center houses the Carl A. Youngman Gallery, a ceramics studio, art studio and professionally-equipped photography and video lab.

 

 

 

The Moseley Chapel

Moseley Chapel, built in the classic style of the New England Congregational Church, seats 325 and functions as a center for all-school meetings, lectures, readings and concerts.

The French Student Center

The French Student Center offers a space for informal gatherings and relaxation. This free-standing student union building, centrally located on campus, includes the school bookstore and a complete snack bar serving hot and cold foods that can be enjoyed in front of a working fireplace.

The Carl. A. Pescosolido, Jr.
Field House


The 48,000 square foot Carl A. Pescosolido, Jr. Field House includes indoor basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a running track, and a climbing wall. The facility also houses the Alfond Fitness Center, complete with weight room and complete circuit of machines for cardio-vascular workouts, and the Alumni Gymnasium, with a training room, a wrestling room, locker rooms, a hardwood basketball court, and a video and meeting room.
Additional Athletic Facilities

The Whiston•Bragdon Arena, opened in November 2007,  houses a state of the art ice hockey rink with a large viewing area, function room, kitchen and  team locker rooms. It is considered by many to be the finest school rink in New England. The Barbara F. Porter Field is a university quality soccer and lacrosse field with a 400-meter, eight-lane track, and lights for night games. The Academy’s campus also boasts acres of playing fields (including a turf field), the nine-hole Ould Newbury Golf Course, outdoor tennis courts, a ropes course with high and low elements, a 3.1 mile cross-country running course, and hiking trails.

Dormitories

There are nine dormitories on campus which house 237 students and their dorm parents. The largest dorm houses 38, while the smallest houses 10. The majority of rooms are singles, and all rooms are equipped for telephone and internet access. Comfortable common areas are furnished with televisions, VCRs, microwave ovens, couches, chairs, and computers with printers. 

Computer Centers

The Academy offers four separate computer centers, each with state of the art workstations. The centers, located in the Frost Building, Parsons Schoolhouse, the Student Center and the Library, are easily accessible for both individual work and classroom instruction. Students can also sign out laptops in the Library and Student Center.
